Created from scratch during COVID-19, Hearthy is now operating in the field of agriculture for almost 2 years, contributing to the vision of a society with zero waste.
But how did it all start?
At the end of 2020, the Co-Founders of Hearthy, Erial Segi and Despoina Adamopoulou, took part in the 1st cycle of IDEA program, which was organized by the Athens Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation (ACEin) and aimed to connect students from different AUEB’s departments, in order to create teams that would develop innovative ideas in specific thematic areas. The initial idea was to collect cut hair from the hair salons and utilize them for the production of an eco-friendly, composted fertilizer and its team was awarded first place.
The team did not stop there and for the past year, it has continued to implement its vision for a green future by providing their idea as a “service” to local communities, from where Hearthy designs strategically the collection of hair waste from the area’s hair salons, define the transportation route and its storage and begins, along with fruit and vegetable waste from the street markets, the composting process.
Hearthy’s team consists of 5 students with different academic backgrounds, who have managed to get involved in a wide variety of programs and competitions and receive feedback on their idea, as well as awarding distinctions. Some of them are the University Startup World Cup, organized by Venture Cup Denmark and China (finalists, 2021) and the Ennovation Competition, organized by ACEin (2nd Young Entrepreneurship Award, 2022).
Along with participating in competitions, Hearthy needed to begin testing its product in a real-life environment. Therefore, the team members started experiments with their plants at their own balconies, which delivered really encouraging results. In May 2022, the startup started collaborating with the Municipality of Vrilissia, in order to implement its business model and test the composting process on a larger scale. The team has received really valuable feedback, has gained meaningful skills and experience and a few days ago, Erial Segi and Despoina Adamopoulou were featured in the list of 30 Under 30 for the year 2023, issued by Forbes Greece!
